UIU hosts Cancer Survivors' Walk

In recognition of National Cancer Survivors Day, a few of the participants start out on the Cancer Survivors’ Walk on the Upper Iowa University Fayette Campus on Thursday.

FAYETTE, Iowa (June 8, 2015) – Upper Iowa University hosted a one-mile walk to honor cancer survivors Thursday. The walk, which began at Victory Gate on the Fayette campus, was in recognition of National Cancer Survivors Day on Sunday, June 7.

Faculty, staff, students, and members of the general public were also encouraged to place a paper “brick,” listing the name of a survivor and the type of cancer the individual beat on the wall of the UIU Rec Center.

According to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, a “survivor” is anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. Currently, there are an estimated 14.5 million cancer survivors in the United States.

National Cancer Survivor Day is an annual worldwide Celebration of Life that is held on the first Sunday in June.  It is the one day each year when communities around the world join forces to recognize cancer survivors, and raise awareness of the ongoing challenges each of them face.

Phi Beta Lambda do well at State

Once again the local members of Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) have done an outstanding job of representing the university at their annual State Leadership Conference.  Three UIU members and one adviser attended the two-day conference, which was hosted by DMACC-Boone on April 10 and 11.

Students representing Dakota State University, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Ashford University, Grand View University, Loras College, and the Boone and Des Moines campuses of DMACC joined the UIU students for competitive events and a variety of business-related workshops.

Please join us in congratulating our students on the following awards:

Krystle Blanks

1st place in Public Speaking and 2nd place in Human Resource Management

Monica Rohe

1st place in Accounting Principles, 3rd place in Organizational Behavior & Leadership and 3rd place in Statistics

Carrie Taylor

3rd place in Financial Concepts and 3rd place in Personal Finance

The chapter brought home awards for 1st place in Local Chapter Annual Business report (written primarily by Carrie Taylor) and 1st place in Conference Sponsorships.  They also reclaimed the highest award of the conference – Lloyd V. Douglas Outstanding Chapter in Iowa – for the eighth year out of the last nine.  The chapter members are very grateful for the support they have received from the Upper Iowa and Fayette communities as they solicited sponsorships and prepared for their competitive events.

We are very proud of how our students represented UIU and look forward to taking them to compete at the national leadership conference in Chicago, IL this June.  We hope you’ll share in our pride and excitement, and if you’re really excited maybe you could consider making a contribution toward their expenses to attend the national conference!

Thanks,

Lynn Isvik and Summer Zwanziger Elsinger Chapter advisers, UIU Phi Beta Lambda
